Overview

Platysmaplasty is the surgical procedure correcting vertical platysma bands (turkey neck) β€” one of the most visible signs of cervical aging. With age, the platysma muscle separates along the midline and forms two vertical bands that alter the neck line and cervicomandibular profile.

Dr. Mubariz Mammadli performs platysmaplasty through a submental approach, with medial suture of the two platysma bands (platysmal corset) and, if necessary, partial lateral sectioning for relaxation. The procedure can be performed alone in younger patients with elastic skin or combined with neck lift in cases with excess skin.

Who it is for

  • Patients with visible vertical platysma bands (turkey neck)
  • People with loss of the sharp cervicomandibular angle
  • Younger patients (35-50) with elastic skin and isolated muscular issue
  • People wanting isolated improvement of the cervical profile
  • Patients combining the procedure with submental liposuction

Procedure overview

  • Consultation with assessment of platysma bands and cervical skin
  • General anesthesia or sedation with local
  • Submental incision of 2-3 cm in the natural crease
  • Medial suture of the platysma bands (corset)
  • Associated submental liposuction if needed

Recovery and aftercare

  • Compressive cervical bandage for 48 hours, then nights for 2 weeks
  • Cervical edema and bruising for 7-10 days
  • Sensation of submental tension during the first week
  • Return to sedentary activity in 7-10 days
  • Follow-ups at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months

Frequently asked questions

How much does platysmaplasty cost in Bucharest?

The price depends on case complexity (platysmal corset alone or combined with liposuction/neck lift) and is set at individual consultation.

How does it differ from a neck lift?

Platysmaplasty treats only the platysma muscle (vertical bands). Neck lift adds excision of excess skin and redraping. Younger patients with elastic skin benefit from platysmaplasty alone; those with loose skin need complete neck lift.

Can botulinum toxin replace platysmaplasty?

Botulinum toxin temporarily (3-4 months) relaxes platysmal bands, offering partial improvement. Platysmaplasty is the definitive surgical solution with an 8-12 year result for structured bands.

Will the scar be visible?

The 2-3 cm incision is hidden in the natural submental crease and becomes practically invisible after complete healing (6-12 months).

When do I return to normal activity?

Sedentary activity resumes in 7-10 days. Light sport in 3-4 weeks, intense sport in 6 weeks. Cervical appearance improves progressively until 3 months.
